Five senses in kindergarten
This Week in Kindergarten...
On Monday, we started the week by introducing our letter of the week—U! We also had a lesson on our five senses, where the kids learned how important they are. We discovered that we use our senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste every day to explore the world around us. In math, we learned a new game called Tug of War, which was a huge hit! The kids had so much fun playing with a partner and are getting really good at recognizing numbers on a die quickly. In gym, we began our gymnastics unit, practicing different balances such as one-point balance, two- and three-point balance, V-sit balance, and bridge balance. We also learned some fun jumps, including pike jumps, star jumps, tuck jumps, and half-turn jumps.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we had a guest teacher, and the class practiced writing uppercase and lowercase U.
On Thursday, we talked about sharing circles and how important it is to listen to and respect one another. We read the story Thanks to the Animals, written by an Indigenous author. The story is about a boy who gets lost and is helped by animals who keep him warm and safe. After reading, we discussed what it feels like to be lost and what we should do if it ever happens. We then talked about gratitude for nature, recognizing that nature provides many things we need to live. Indigenous peoples express gratitude for nature every day, and we should too. During our sharing circle, we each shared something we are thankful for in nature:
Here are a few examples:
Marin and Shae said, "I am thankful for flowers because they make the world colorful."
Huxley said, "I am thankful for coconuts because they give juice."
Saige shared, "I am thankful for water and the wind because they give me something to drink and air to breathe."
Rishvanth said, "I am thankful for dogs."
Viaansh shared, "I am thankful for trees because they give us air to breathe."
Afterward, we illustrated our gratitude by drawing in our journals.
On Friday, we started the day by playing our Tug of War math game again. Then, we wrapped up our letter U by drawing pictures of words that start with the letter U. The kids came up with unicorn, unicycle, universe, umbrella, up, ukulele, and more! We then had center time before moving on to science. In science, we kicked off our five senses unit by focusing on sight. Each child used a clipboard and pencil to observe and record different objects using their sense of sight. We ended the day with our final Club Day of the year!
It was a fun and busy week of learning! 😊
In the next coming weeks we will be continuning our five senses unit and will be doing some tasting when we get to the sense, taste. Please let me know if there are any issues with this. Thank you so much for your continued support!
